Carpentry
Carpentry refers to a trade concerned with building objects out of wood, such as buildings or furniture. Carpentry is work performed by a carpenter, who is a person experienced in building wooden items. These items may include houses, garages, or bookshelves. There is a vast array of objects that can be built. Carpenters use many tools designed for carpentry such as a hammer, saw, and nails. There are many other tools a carpenter may use. Carpenters not only build things like furniture, they also install and maintain those things. Anyone can become a carpenter through apprenticeship. There is no formal education that is required to become a carpenter. Almost all carpenter work is performed by men, about 98.5 % being male. In 1999, carpentry was the 4th male-dominated trade in the country.
“Carpentier” is the Old French word for the English word carpenter. The English word became known as “wright”, which could be used in compound words such as boat-wright or wheel-wright. In Britain and Australia the slang term for a carpenter is a “chippie”, but in Germany carpenter is called a “Zimmerman”-literally room-man.
There are several types and occupations of carpenters. One type of carpenter is a finish carpenter. He usually does cabinetry, furniture making , and fine woodworking, just to name a few things. The finish carpenter usually does work where measurements and must be exact. A trim carpenter does lots of ornamental work, such as baseboards, mantels, and trimwork. A carpenter that specializes in fine woodwork, such as building wooden cabinets, dressers, wardrobes, and other wooden furniture designed for storage is usually called a cabinet maker. A ships carpenter specializes in building and maintenance work on a ship. The adjective to describe a carpenter builds that builds temporary scenery for movies, TV shows, etc., is scenic. He usually takes it down when the cast is finished with it. Carpenters who build the skeletal structure for buildings are called framers. He does the framework for structures.
Carpentry tools are used to build things from wood, using body power and/or electrical power. In ancient times, woodworking tools were made from stone. Today they are made from metal alloys that provide strength and durability. The tools are divided into two types: either hand powered or electric powered. Some examples of hand tools are chisels and handsaws. Circular saws and electrical drills are good examples of power tools. The purpose of tools is to cut and shape the wood, either in sheets or blocks to a required dimension in order to build a given wooden object. Carpentry tools have many uses. They can thin the wood, round the wood, make holes in it, or curve the wood, as well as other things. Safety goggles should be worn when using carpentry tools.
In countries such as Germany and China, carpenters are required to attend a rigorous training course in order to become journeymen. In the U.S., union members are required to make a minimum test score in order to become a certified journeyman, but uncertified carpenters may obtain journeyman status depending on their level of experience.
